Slotted Spring Pins

SPIROL’s Slotted Spring Pin offering consists of 1) SPIROL Standard Metric Slotted Pins, 2) SPIROL Standard Inch Slotted Pins and 3) ISO 8752 Slotted Pins. A Slotted Pin is a general purpose low cost component used in numerous fastening applications. Compressed as it is installed, the pin applies continuous pressure towards the sides of the hole wall. The primary spring action of the Slotted Pin is focused on the area opposite the slot as the two halves of the pin compress during installation. This flexibility allows the Slotted Pin to accommodate wider hole tolerances than rigid Solid Pins which results in reduced manufacturing costs of the component.

Otherwise known as Roll Pins, Split Pins, Expansion Pins, Tension Pins or simply Spring Pins, SPIROL’s Slotted Spring Pins are available in high carbon steel and stainless steel in diameters ranging from 1.5mm up to 12mm for metric pins and .062” (1/16) up to .500” (1/2) for inch pins.

SPIROL’s Standard Metric Slotted Spring Pins have a number of advantages compared to Slotted Pins produced to the ISO 8752 specification:
- Slot width narrower than the wall thickness, thus preventing the pins from nesting or interlocking.
- Smaller expanded (pre-insertion) diameter which results in lower insertion force and smoother insertion.
- Rounder pins, which in turn results in better conformance of the pin to the hole wall and eliminates the edge of the slot damaging the hole during insertion.
- Lower stress in the spine of the installed pin. This results in longer pin life in shock or fatigue applications.
- Ability to use automatic vibratory feeding of pins for installation without interlocking.
- Plating of pins for additional corrosion resistance or appearance without “touch marks” or the bonding of nested pins

SPIROL’s Standard Slotted Spring Pins have a slot width narrower than the wall thickness and thus do not nest or interlock. SPIROL’s Standard Inch Slotted Spring Pins are produced with state-of-the-art technology resulting in lower insertion force, smoother insertion, and rounder outside diameters as compared to Slotted Pins produced with traditional methods. The edge of the slot on SPIROL’s Standard Slotted Pin does not damage the hole during installation, and there is lower stress in the spine of the installed pin resulting in longer pin life when subjected to shock and vibration. Since these Slotted Pins do not interlock, they are conducive for automatic feeding.

SPIROL’s Standard Inch Slotted Pins meet or exceed ASME B18.8.2 specifications and are available in high carbon steel, nickel (austenitic) stainless steel and chrome (martensitic) stainless steel in diameters ranging from .062” (1/16”) to .500” (1/2”).

In addition to SPIROL’s Standard Metric Slotted Pins, SPIROL offers a standard line of ISO 8752 Slotted Spring Pins to meet the market demand for these pins. SPIROL offers Slotted Spring Pins manufactured to the ISO 8752 specification in diameters ranging from 2mm to 12mm in both high carbon steel and nickel (austenitic) stainless steel in plain finish. SPIROL does not offer ISO 8752 pins with zinc plating due to the propensity for ISO 8752 pins to interlock during the plating process.
